Shameless Self Promotion

A little bit about me, what I do, and where you can find it …

At the height of my quarantine hair/beard shagginess

If I read correctly, I can’t make money on this post, but I think it’s okay to post links to my other endeavors on Medium in general. If I’m wrong, someone can scold me and I’ll take it down.

My name is Chris, and I’ve been writing for many years. Mostly via Blogspot and random Facebook musings at 2am that I regret the following morning. Though, now I’ve found Medium, and hope to be more prominent here.

As writing is one of my two primary talents (so I’m told), I finally pursued it to the point of publishing my first book earlier this year. It was a few years in the making, and is certainly niche to the “Christian” market, but I’m proud to have it done. Link to it at bottom of article.

I did go the self publishing route, so any support anyone would like to give by purchasing a copy, or reviewing it, is appreciated. I’ll post more below on how to do that.

I have trouble speaking of things I do well, but my other “talent” would be music. I classify myself as singer-songwriter, and do guitar, vocals, and harmonica mostly.

I have been told that I have a rather unique voice. It developed from singing cover songs on street corners to passers by in college. It’s gravelly. I used to say I had a Bon Jovi high range, and sounded like Bob Dylan in key otherwise. I modeled it a bit after my uncle, Jimmy LaFave, who also had a more unique singing voice.

Singing on street corners began from my failed attempt at “wooing” girls by playing songs in front of the main girls dormitory while at college. Probably creepy by today’s standards, but I managed a compliment or two, despite not finding a long term relationship from it. And, also met another musician with whom I formed a college cover band for a few years.

Fun fact: When I met my wife on a mission trip to Mexico, I did “woo” her by singing and playing guitar at the worksite. I’m useless at manual labor, so the leader of our group told me I could entertain everyone by just playing music. I used that as an opportunity to catch the attention of our rather attractive translator for the worksite. We’ve been happily married for 14 years now, so in the end, I suppose I’m good enough at music to get a girl. Take that for what you will.

Obviously, if anyone wants to give me my big break for writing or music, I’m open to it. Otherwise, they are two things that I have a passion for pursuing whenever I can motivate myself to do so.

I put together an EP of my main Christian oriented songs a few years back, and posted it. “Street Corner Salvation” is the name of the EP and my favorite track from it, which was also the only track recorded at an actual studio. A good listen I think either way, whether or not you identify with the faith.

So, Chris Byers, writer, musician, James Bond fan, casual gamer, Christian (this probably should have been further up on the list). These are things that make up a general outline of who I am.

I’m also quite patient, and try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt for most things. You can punch me in the face, and I’d probably offer to take you to lunch afterwards to talk out our differences. Not sure if that’s a gift or a curse. Thankfully no one has ever punched me to test that theory.
